He was born on December 29, 1809, in Boston, Massachusetts, and passed away on April 2, 1891, in Washington D.C.

He is known for his influence in Freemasonry, as well as his writings on the history and philosophy of Freemasonry.

He was also a prominent Confederate leader during the American Civil War.

Furthermore, he was the only man in the history of the United States to reach the 33rd degree of the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry.
